“Understanding is the first step to acceptance and only with acceptance can there be recovery.”
Similar with our country, if we just understand what really politics is about—its role in the society and nation, the people involve in it, the changes it brought, the problems it faces, its struggle to serve the people and the possible solutions to its problems—then we will not regard it as the culprit for every problems we face. I am not saying that it hasn’t done anything wrong with us but my point is we should not blame it just because we are being influenced by those that we see, hear and experience from our own, our friends and family, and from the media. I respect the opinions of each and everyone but we must see the whole picture first and not just its parts. It will be better if we will have a deeper understanding with it.
Understanding it is a process and it requires time, effort and willingness. As what they said, “ To discover nature is to emancipate reason”. It is then easier to understand when there is a presence of willingness accompanied with reason. A person with open ears and mind ready to absorb and digest everything, though some of them are really hard to do, can develop a view in a politically acceptable way. Though in my case, I was forced to enroll in Political Science 1 for certain reasons, I found it, afterwards, as an opportunity to explore the world of politics and determine the important role that even a simple student like me plays. I’ve seen it as road to have a different view towards politics. I now understand that we are like this today because of our culture—too personalistic and family oriented. Because of being personalistic, we tend to prevent ourselves from thinking and acting properly. Just because we vote someone for a certain position and if in the end he/she wins, we tend to depend almost everything (especially the seven sacraments) to them. And if they fail to comply with our needs, we tend to consider them as the most worthless politician ever elected. We tend to lose our trust to them. We tend to be blind for their greater and more important accomplishments. I am not against someone—either the politician or the people—because I myself is also depending on their financial support for me to continue studying in the University of the Philippines. I just want to point out that what we don’t understand is that we fail to do our part as citizens to use our rights in an appropriate manner. We tend to abuse them especially if there is a certain relationship exists between us and the politician. It doesn’t necessarily mean that because they are the leaders, everything is under their responsibility.
All in all, understanding is an integral step for recovery especially with the present condition of our nation. It will contribute a lot if everyone will have this. This can be applied not only with politics but also in everyday life. Just like the picture above, an understanding about simple rules can help us to be safe and for the part of the nation, to regulate our country well. It is better to understand things than to remain clueless because it is hard to think, act and react if you do not understand them. You are not aware if you are on the right track or not. This will guide us to see hope and target the progress that all of us are aiming for.
